The country’s second largest thermal power plant, 3000 mw (6X500 mw) Talcher Super Thermal Power Station (TSTPS) at Kaniha in Orissa, will add another 500 mw unit.

The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) chairman-cum-managing director, RS Sharma, said on Monday that the tender for the expansion project would be floated by December 2010. He said that the feasibility report of the project will be ready soon.

Sharma, who is on a two-day visit to the state from Sunday, said that the capacity of the 460 mw Talcher Thermal Power Station at Talcher would also be expanded by adding two 660 mw units at a cost of Rs 7,000 crore. Stating that the tenders for the ramp-up programmes would be floated by October, 2010, he said that the project would be completed in five years.

The NTPC chief said that the Central sector generation company is going to add an additional 17000 mw capacity by 2011-12. He, however, lamented that NTPC would not be able to achieve the target for capacity addition during the current plan period. According to him, the target shortfall would be because some of the proposed projects had not come up as scheduled.
