Forty-five nuclear supplier states on Saturday approved the US proposal to drop a ban on trade with India, advancing a US-Indian nuclear energy deal, diplomats in the closed meeting said.
The decision followed a tense debate over conditions for the move demanded by Nuclear Suppliers Group members to minimise any damage to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, which India has not joined. Details were not immediately known.
One hurdle remained before the US-India deal could take force -- ratification by the US Congress. It must act before adjourning in late September for elections or the deal could be left to an uncertain fate under a new US administration.
Congress hails the deal
Congress hailed the NSG waiver for India as "historic" and said it was a significant victory not only for the UPA but for all Indians. "It is a historic day for India. It is a red letter day," party spokesman Manish Tiwari said moments after reports from Vienna spoke of India getting the waiver by consensus. He said it was indeed a significant victory not only the UPA but for all Indians.
