Kolkata, Mar 28: Mithun Chakrabarty, who officially joined the Indian Cricket League as the co-owner of the Kolkata Tigers, is ready to do his bit for the development of football as well. He is likely to take over the football team of Howrah Union, one of the oldest clubs in Kolkata.

Though Chakrabarty remained tight-lipped, HU general secretary Indranath Dey said, "Yes, he is interested in taking over our football team. Zee group officials in Kolkata got in touch with me, and were impressed by the infrastructure of the club. Our football team and the academy will be benefitted by Mithun's assistance."

Dey, who was in Cooch Behar, told FE that he would be able to give a clearer picture once he returns.

Chakrabarty said here on Thursday, "I am a football fan. Football is my first love and that is why I had set up the Bengal Football Acedamy in 2004. But cricket is a platform that ensures greater mileage."

According to sources, Mithun was initially requested to help Tollygunge Agragami, another city club.

He even met club supremo Mantu Ghosh, but nothing tangible did come up, as Ghosh was not ready to change the name of the club according to Chakrabarty's suggestion.

Sources said Mithun is highly impressed by the Howrah Union set-up as the club has its own ground that it shares with Mohd. Sporting. Besides, HU runs a football academy, which is likely to be linked with the Bengal Football Academy.
