Kolkata to have chip design facility by mid-2009

Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 0101 hrs West Bengal will have an India Design Centre (IDC), the first-of-its kind in the country, at the Salt Lake Sector V. The chip design facility will be operational from mid-2009.

West Bengal IT minister Debesh Das, who laid the foundation stone of the 20-storey building on Tuesday, said the facility will be set up according to a concept paper prepared by IIT Kharagpur. He said as IT industry in the country was mainly software driven, it was imperative to start high-end jobs, namely chip designing and fabrication.

The centre will offer semiconductor-related post graduate courses. It will also have space for semiconductor-driven companies and incubation centre for promoting entrepreneurs.

Infinity Infotech Parks chairman & managing director Ravindra Chamaria said, "We are developing 6 million sqft of IT space in Bantala and Sector V. The eight IT-related projects with Webel in these two places are expected to be completed by March 2010, he said.

"The centre is being developed via public-private partnership model with the government providing land and Infinity Infotech setting up the infrastructure," Das said. The space ratio between the government and the private partner in this Rs 100-crore project is 40:60, he said.

"The centre, to be set up on 1.7 acres, will conform to international standards covering the entire semiconductor spectrum, VLSI design, assembling, testing and packaging," he said.

"An advanced IT park related to semiconductor design will also be built near the IIT Kharagpur, and the process of land acquisition is on," Das told reporters.
