Perplexity has made its agent-driven AI browser, Comet, accessible to all users at no cost. “Browsing is smarter with Comet,” the company claims, pledging to keep it free indefinitely as it positions the browser as a strong alternative to Google Chrome.
According to Perplexity, the Comet browser functions as a personal AI assistant capable of browsing the web, managing tabs, composing emails, shopping, and handling a variety of other tasks.
The company first introduced Comet in July exclusively for Perplexity Max subscribers at $200 per month. Since then, the waitlist has surged to “millions” of users, the startup revealed.
Currently, Comet is limited to desktop use, but Perplexity intends to expand its reach. The company is developing a dedicated mobile app to deliver the same AI-driven browsing experience on smartphones.
All about Comet Assistant:
A standout element of Comet is its Comet Assistant, designed to support users throughout their browsing experience. It aids with research, meetings, coding, shopping, and a variety of other tasks, all without interrupting your flow. Each time a new tab is opened, the Comet Assistant is immediately available, enabling users to ask questions or complete tasks on the spot.
All about Background Assistants:
In addition to making the Comet AI browser free for everyone, Perplexity has unveiled a new feature called Background Assistants. These assistants operate concurrently and independently, performing tasks in the background while you continue your work.
“In the background, your personal team of AI assistants eliminates any task on your to-do list. Background Assistants are a platform where your curiosity becomes productivity,” Perplexity explained.
Perplexity has unveiled the launch collaborators for Comet Plus, the subscription service introduced in August. This plan offers users curated news content, which CEO Aravind Srinivas compared to Apple News Plus.
