Airtel and Jio, the two biggest telecom operators in India, have recently discontinued their budget entry-level prepaid plans. While the move will boost the average revenue per user (ARPU) for Airtel and Jio, a pricier prepaid recharge plan will pinch the common man. Additionally, VI has also replicated the same decision and followed suit of the market leaders.
The plan discontinued by Airtel, priced at Rs. 249, provided 1GB of data daily for 28 days, it also offered unlimited voice-calls and 100 SMS per day. Importantly, it offered benefits like free HelloTunes, Perplexity Pro AI, and Xstream Play to subscribers. Jio also removed its Rs 249 plan, which offered 1GB of daily data for 28 days. Meanwhile, the Jio plan offered the same 1Gb data and unlimited calls along with Jio Cloud and Jio Cinema subscription.
Experts note that operators, including Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea are under pressure to improve cash flows to support their ongoing 5G rollout and spectrum-related investments. Reliance Jio, while not confirming timelines, has previously maintained that tariff corrections are necessary to sustain network expansion.
