Jolly LLB 2 box office collections day 8: Even with three new releases out on Friday, Akshay Kumar was still most moviegoers’ first choice. On Friday (day 8), Jolly LLB 2 picked up Rs 4.14 crore. According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, the film now stands at an impressive Rs 81.85 crore. Initially, industry experts were doubtful about whether Akshay’s latest film can keep his current hat-trick going (Housefull 3, Airlift and Rustom) and enter the Rs 100 Crore Club. However, given these latest encouraging figures, Jolly LLB 2’s arrival at the 100 crore mark seems only a few days away. Even with Rangoon coming out next weekend, Akshay’s legal drama will inch its way to the mark and eventually settle just a little above it.

Jolly LLB 2’s second week success isn’t too surprising when you take a look at its competition. Two of the films – Irada, with Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi, and Running Shaadi, with Taapsee Pannu and Amit Sadh – are full-fledged indie movies. In a cinematic climate where critically acclaimed indie films struggle to get noticed, the ones with lukewarm reviews, as is the case with Running Shaadi and Irada, get limited audiences.

These films will depend very heavily on positive word of mouth and even with that, it may not be enough to contend with Akshay’s star power.

The other contender is The Ghazi Attack. While it has many ingredients to make it a hit – patriotism, token female lead (Taapsee again) and a unique storyline – it may not be enough to counter Jolly, which has those ingredients in a much larger dose. While films that were running solely on the hype around their stars such as Raees or Kaabil might have felt the pressure of the new releases, Jolly LLB 2 also boasts of a good plot and a social issue (namely, the flaws in the justice system). All these factors combined make it the winner of the coming week at the box office as well.
