Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced on Saturday that the MBBS course in the state will now be available in Hindi starting from the current academic session.

The announcement, made on the occasion of ‘Hindi Diwas,’ aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of offering medical education in Hindi, which he had shared during a 2022 rally in Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking to local reporters, Sai said, “On this Hindi Diwas, our government has made a significant decision: the MBBS course will now also be taught in Hindi. From the 2024-25 session, first-year students will have access to Hindi textbooks. The health department has been directed to ensure the availability of books and study materials.”

He emphasised that this initiative is part of a broader effort to move away from the “old Macaulay imperialist education policy” and highlighted that Chhattisgarh has fully implemented the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Sai added that this change would greatly benefit students from rural areas, many of whom come from Hindi-medium schools and struggle with English in medical courses. “Studying in Hindi will strengthen their foundational knowledge, deepen their understanding, and help them become better doctors,” he said.

Hindi Diwas, observed annually on September 14, commemorates the Constituent Assembly’s 1949 decision to adopt Hindi in Devanagari script as the official language of the Union of India.
