Former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student and activist Umar Khalid, who has been in jail since September 2020 in connection with his alleged role in the Delhi riots conspiracy case, has moved Delhi’s Karkardooma court for regular bail, reports Bar and Bench.

Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai heard the plea on Wednesday and sought the prosecution’s response to the plea. The matter will be next heard on March 11.

In 2022, the Karkardooma court had denied him bail. Following this, he approached the High Court, which also denied him the bail in October that year. The activist then appealed before the Supreme Court.

Earlier, on February 14, a top court bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal were slated to hear the matter, when Khalid’s counsel senior advocate Kapil Sibal told the court that the bail plea was being withdrawn.
