Filmfare awards 2018: When the Filmfare awards nominations arrived roughly two days ago, the industry was in for a BIG shock! In spite of being the year which saw the release of some big Bollywood films featuring some even bigger names, most names have been missed out from the list. The curation this time was different and the difference was evident. In spite of holding some of the biggest box office records this season, Tiger Zinda Hai failed to make it to the final nominations and this sure was a shocker. But this also was concluded that this year, it was not the box office collection that was being considered to finalise the nominations. Award shows have always been criticized for shunning critically acclaimed films to commercially successful ones.
Bollywood movies have two categories, the ones which the audience shower with their love and the other which garner critical acclaim and rave reviews. The former tend to sweep away most awards in ceremonies which have always been a talking point for media. But the 63rd Jio Filmfare Awards has broken the stereotype and chosen films to their acclaim.

In the nomination for the best films, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Hindi Medium, Secret Superstar, Toilet – Ek Prem Katha. Most of these films might not have been a part of the coveted Rs 100 cr-200 cr-300 cr club but each film surely had a social message, most! Akshay Kumar’s Toilet- Ek Prem Katha was about dealing with a problem quite prevalent in India, open defecation. Hindi Medium, Secret Superstar too had an unconventional theme which also turned out to be a surprise hit. The directors of the same films have also been nominated for the award of best directors as well.
A year which witnessed the likes of Tiger Zinda Hai, Golmaal Again. Fukrey 2 doing extraordinarily well at the box office, they have been ignored by the jury, and the nomination list is the evidence. Films like A Death In The Gunj which had hardly done any business at the box office has grabbed 6 nominations. The film starring Vikrant Massey and helmed by Konkona Sen Sharma was surely a gripping tale! Newton, which was the official entry for Oscar nominations this year was another gem. The film which started off slow at the box office had a notable raise after the Oscar entry news went viral. Secret superstar grabbed a total of 9 nominations.
Rewarding a film for its content and performances rather than just its box office number is probably what Filmfare Awards 2018 are likely looking forward to doing.
