Hours after Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) neutralised a suspected ISIS terrorist in Thakurganj area of Lucknow, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh didn’t surprise many by his comment on the incident. Instead of condemning the terror incident in its entirety, the Congress leader raised questions on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetisation decision.

Singh’s comment was probably inspired by the fact that PM Modi and demonetisation supporters have been claiming that it would lead to the elimination of terrorism sponsored from Pakistan into India.

No rational thinking person can deny that demonetisation was a right as far as terror funding was concerned. But as long as supporting ground for terrorists exists within the country, terrorism cannot be eliminated.

Moreover, the fact that Indian security forces were able to bust an alleged ISIS group before they could effect their dirty acts is a success and every Indian should be proud of it. It seems Digvijaya Singh can’t see it. Maybe he can’t see anything beyond politics and probably this is the reason why he chose to question Modi instead of condemning the incident, or congratulating the security agencies.

While talking to Times Now today, Singh said, “We were told by Hon’ble Prime Minister that demonetisation will finish terrorism. Has it? One of the competent Intelligence Bureau officer, who has been promoted as one of the greatest police officers who has fought terrorism all his life, Mr Ajit Doval, What is his performance?”

“We must be very very strong and take strong action against all such elements who work against national security, whether they are Hindus or Muslims. Why was PM quiet when four of its activists were caught spying for Pakistan. Why did he not tweet? Why did he not tweet when three Indians were killed in the US. He tweets on simple issues,” he added.

Ironically, this is not the first time when Singh has shocked many by his stand on a matter of national concern. He is the one Congress leader who openly endorsed the claim that RSS was behind the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai in 2008, even as the world knows that the terrorists belonged to Pakistan. In 2011, Singh lent his weight to a book titled “RSS ka shadayantra, 26/11” (26/11, an RSS conspiracy). The content of the book is as shocking as its title.

Even as Singh endorsed the book by releasing it, he sought to clarify to The Indian Express that the attacks were carried out by Pakistani terrorists. He had raked a controversy then by suggesting that RSS might be behind the killing of Hemant Karkare, who was leading the ATS probe into Malegaon blasts. Karkare was killed during 26/11 attacks. “I said that as far as the 26/11 incident is concerned, there must be no suspicion that it was done by Pakistani terrorists. But this is for sure that there was pressure on Hemant Karkareji,” Singh had told IE.
