Mumbai’s CNG supply took a big hit on Sunday after the main GAIL pipeline inside the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers (RCF) compound was damaged. Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) confirmed that this damage affected gas flow to its City Gate Station (CGS) in Wadala, which is the key point for supplying CNG across the city.
The disruption has crippled road transport on the first day of the workweek. Operations at all 486 CNG refuelling stations in the MMR came to a sudden pause.
CNG supply cut impacts transportation in Mumbai
The sudden CNG supply cut was reported across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. A huge number of autorickshaws and taxis, including Ola and Uber vehicles, that run on CNG were impacted. Many buses of public transport bodies also depend on MGL’s gas. According to MGL, the problem was caused by “third-party damage” inside the RCF area. The company did not say how the damage happened or who caused it.
“Due to third-party damage in the main gas supply pipeline of GAIL (Gas Authority of India) inside RCF (Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertiliser) compound, the gas supply to MGL’s City Gate Station (CGS) at Wadala has been affected,” the company said in a press statement.
MGL warned that CNG stations in all these areas may not function until the supply line is fixed. To avoid panic at residential buildings, the company said they are giving priority to the piped natural gas (PNG) for homes. This means households will continue to receive gas for cooking, even if CNG pumps remain shut.
Industries instructed to shift to other fuels
Industries and commercial units in the affected zones have been asked to switch to alternate fuels temporarily. MGL said it will normalise supplies as soon as the damaged pipeline is repaired and GAIL restores gas flow to the Wadala station. “Gas supplies across MGL’s network will normalise once the damage is rectified and supply is restored to CGS Wadala,” the MGL statement said
The company has not shared any estimate of when the pipeline will be fixed. The company expressed regret over the inconvenience but said the situation is beyond its control.
