An influencer committed to helping women live abroad recently took to her social media handle to impart another piece of advice to people wanting to leave the United States. Nathalie, who is the author of the book “Becoming Abroad” and is better known by her SNS alias ‘@_fabulousnat,” publicly advocates for women moving to alternative countries abroad for their wellbeing.
A few days ago, she took to her Instagram account to leave a message for “Americans who want to leave the country.” Helping people find courage to move abroad is essentially the foundation of Nathalie’s online presence.
However, here new piece of advice also comes at a time when headlines pouring in from the US have been severely distressing, especially in light of President Donald Trump’s seemingly endless immigration crackdown.
Influencer’s ‘safer’ alternatives for American planning to move out
“If I wanted to leave the U.S. to a country where I could feel safer, more regulated, and less impacted by constant political instability—these are the places I’d look at first,” influencer @_fabulousnat wrote in her caption. The post was backed by a video message, wherein she goes on to list three country picks that have piqued her own interest.
Nathalie firmly believes that moving abroad is equivalent to prioritising one’s own safety, autonomy and future, as is also underlined in her recent Instagram post.
“You are feeling the pull to leave right now because your nervous system is tired of living in a state of low-grade alert,” added, while listing out her own picks as Thailand, Portugal and Albania.
Why leave America: Influencer’s video message says it all
Her argument for Thailand being a “safer” option was based on how the country chooses to stay out of international affairs and simply concern itself with its own borders and domestic issues.
“You can get a Destination Thailand visa (DTV), which is a five-year tourist visa, just by having enough funds and taking a class where you learn Thai culture even deeper,” she said, while admitting that she recently got her own visa.
The “Becoming Abroad” author herself moved to Thailand quite a while back, as is documented in her YouTube videos and one of the currently pinned Instagram posts.
Sharing her own physical transformation after making the switch, Nathalie wrote in an August 2025 post, “The quantum leap that my body, mind, and spirit experienced just from finally choosing to commit to my life abroad has been insane.” She went on to note that she had become a completely different person than who she was two years ago.
As for why Thailand remains her top pick, she detailed in the months old post, “I lost 40 lbs (75 lbs total from my heaviest) since moving to Thailand, and I truly believe it’s not just the good and active lifestyle. I’ve recalibrated my nervous system.
I have a new baseline level for stress and it is NO WHERE NEAR what I was able to hold in the States. My body is no longer running on cortisol…”
With Portugal second on her list, Nathalie said it was one of the top places she could see herself living “long term,” and possibly even consider getting citizenship there.
“Portugal has a Digital Nomad visa (D8 visa), which grants you two years in the country, and then you can renew that Digital Nomad for an additional three years,” she continued in the video. “After three years of residency in Portugal, you can apply for permanent residency.”
According to the Immigrant Invest website, the Portugal Digital Nomad visa started being issued in the country in October 2022. Freelancers and remote workers on a permanent contract are eligible for it.
For her third recommendation, Nathalie turned to Albania, a place she associates with stability. The travel influencer further highlighted a pattern she had witnessed among people who had moved to the said country.
“They’re saying how safe it is. It’s actually really cheap there. Albania is beautiful, and is not yet overrun by tourists and foreigners, so it’s still a gem at this point of time,” Nathalie added in the video.
