Murugappa Group’s Former chairman Arunachalam Vellayan passed away in the early hours of November 17 after a prolonged illness. He was 72 at the time of his passing.

The industrialist who also served as Chairman Emeritus of Coromandel International, is survived by his wife Lalitha Vellayan, sons Arun Vellayan and Narayanan Vellayan, and grandchildren, the group said in a statement.

Over the decades, Vellayan played a crucial role in driving the growth and expansion of the Murugappa Group, providing strategic direction for the diversification of the conglomerate’s business. He served on the boards of several group companies, including terms as Chairman of Coromandel International Limited and EID Parry. 

Key leadership roles held by Vellayan 

Beyond the conglomerate, he held board roles in various companies such as Kanoria Chemicals & Industries, EXIM Bank, and Indian Overseas Bank.

He also held leadership roles across multiple industry associations, including the Southern India Chamber of Commerce, Fertiliser Association of India, Indian Sugar Mills Association, and the All India Cycle Manufacturers Association. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Governors at Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM-Kozhikode).

Vellayan completed his schooling at The Doon School and graduated from Delhi University’s  Shri Ram College of Commerce. He later earned a Diploma in Industrial Administration from Aston University and a master’s degree in Business Studies from Warwick Business School. He was also conferred honorary Doctor of Science degrees by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, and Aston University, UK.
