Bengaluru and Delhi Airports have jointly bagged the ‘Best Airport of the Year’ at the Wings India Awards 2024 in the Civil Aviation Sector. Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia few days back congratulated Delhi and Bengaluru Airport on being recognised as top-performing airports for the year 2022. Both the airports featured in the list of top ten global airports in terms of on-time performance (OTP).

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), Delhi

The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), Delhi offers range of services and amenities. IGI Airport is well-connected with public transportation, including taxis, buses, and the Delhi Metro. There are lounges available for both domestic and international travelers, providing comfort and facilities such as Wi-Fi, refreshments, and business services.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) is India’s largest airport and has four runways – RW 09/27, RW 11R/29L, RW 10/28, and RW 11L/29R. Earlier, DIAL had stated that the newly built fourth runway of the IGIA will be CAT III compliant on January 26. CAT III relates to flight operations conducted in conditions of reduced visibility. As of now three IGIA runways are operational. When a runway is CAT-III-compliant, flight operations can happen even in low-visibility conditions, but not in zero visibility.

Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport)

Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport) also conferred with the ‘>25 MPPA Traffic Award’ in the Airports category. This recognition underscores BLR Airport’s commitment to operational excellence, a seamless passenger experience, environmental stewardship, and the incorporation of cutting-edge technology.

Transformation of BLR Airport

Over the past year, the airport has significantly expanded its passenger capacity. To ensure a stress-free experience and smooth passenger flow, BLR Airport has increased entry gates, check-in counters, and informative display boards. International operations have been relocated from Terminal 1 (T1) to the new Terminal 2 (T2), covering 255,661 square meters and designed to handle 25 million passengers annually. The expansion of immigration and emigration counters has further contributed to reduced wait times and an enhanced overall journey.

Environmental responsibility is a key focus at BLR Airport, evidenced by its Level 4+ Transition status under the globally recognized Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program. The airport actively implements initiatives to minimize its environmental footprint, such as achieving net energy-neutral status, banning single-use plastics at F&B outlets, and engaging in extensive landscaping and afforestation efforts. BLR Airport goes beyond water neutrality, regenerating more water than it consumes. The entire campus is powered by 100% renewable energy, showcasing a strong commitment to sustainability.

The design of Terminal 2 (T2) reflects BLR Airport’s dedication to sustainable practices. Pre-certified with a Platinum LEED rating by USGBC and the IGBC Green New Building Platinum certification, T2 is the world’s largest terminal to achieve these esteemed distinctions. Its design seamlessly integrates modern technology with India’s rich culture and heritage, featuring over 60 artworks depicting the ‘Naurasas’ or nine emotions. Passengers experience a unique journey through the ‘Terminal in a Garden,’ surrounded by greenery amidst the bustling airport environment.

Innovation and technology play a crucial role at BLR Airport, ensuring a smooth and efficient passenger experience. Advanced solutions such as Digi Yatra facial recognition for contactless boarding, the BLR Pulse app providing real-time updates, and self-baggage drop systems for faster check-in prioritize passenger convenience. The Automated Tray Retrieval System (ATRS) streamlines baggage screening, enhancing overall efficiency. Notably, in October 2023, BLR Airport achieved the top position as the world’s most punctual airport for three consecutive months, underscoring its dedication to operational excellence and on-time departures.

This recognition as the Best Airport in India reflects BLR Airport’s unwavering focus on customer experience and substantial investment in capacity. As it continues to achieve new milestones, BLR Airport aims to serve as the premier Gateway to South and Central India.
