Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday melowed down on his stand on the Rama Setu issue, as he asserted that he was not against realignment of the Sethusamudram project.
Stating he was only concerned about the implementation of the project, Karunanidhi told a television news channel that it was for the ?engineers to decide on any realignment?. The DMK and the BJP entered into a virtual confrontation last week after the Tamil Nadu chief minister, supporting the first affidavit filed by the Centre on the Sethusamudram project in the supreme court, contended that Lord Rama was as much as a lie as the Himalayas and the Ganga are truth.
On the protests by DMK cadres outside the BJP headquarters here on Sunday condemning the statements made by Vedanti against him, Karunanidhi said ?that was a one day token protest?. However, he said demonstrations for implementation of the project would continue throughout the state. To a query why the Congress was keeping silent on the issue, he said there was no need for the Congress to comment on it as the matter was in the Supreme Court. On relations with the Congress, he ruled out any differences between the two parties. ?Don?t worry, nothing will happen,? he said.
The DMK leader TR Baalu has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appealing to ?take immediate action against unlawful and undemocratic attitude of persons like Vedanti, who is driven by religious fundamental forces?.
