Apparently upset over the ?light sentence? awarded to former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore in the Ruchika molestation and suicide case, a 29-year-old student of the prestigious National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, stabbed him in the face outside the districts courts in Chandigarh on Monday.
Rathore, who was appearing in the court in connection with a CBI appeal to increase his sentence, was left with a bleeding right cheek but no serious injuries. A smiling Rathore, with his cheek bandaged and bloodstains on his clothes, returned to the court two hours later, straight from hospital. He refused to take any media queries.
The police believe the NID student, Utsav Sharma, who hails from Varanasi, is mentally unstable. He had managed to reach close to Rathore pretending to be a photojournalist, and had been outside the court since the morning.
The incident took place at 1.30 pm as Rathore emerged from court during a lunch break. Utsav took out a knife and stabbed Rathore thrice.
