Benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty slipped over a percentage point on Wednesday on account of selling in frontline blue chip counters. Sensex closed 310.28 points down at 27,774.88, while Nifty 50 index settled 102.95 points down at 8,575. In the 50-share index, Adani Ports, Bank of Baroda, TCS, HCL Technologies and Zee Entertainment gained between 0.70 per cent and 7.46 per cent. On the other hand, Grasim Industries, Idea Cellular, ACC, Lupin and Ambuja Cement slid between 4.02 per cent and 7.04 per cent.
Among the sectoral indices on BSE, the BSE Oil & Gas index fell the most — 2.19 per cent, followed by BSE Auto (down 1.93 per cent), BSE Healthcare (down 1.70 per cent) and BSE Power (down 1.56 per cent). Rest all other sectoral indices also ended the day in red.
Market mood stood down beat with the report that the gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) of the public sector banks increased Rs 2.16 lakh crore in 2013-14 to Rs 4.76 lakh crore in 2015-16. Government on Tuesday said the top 100 borrowers of public sector banks owe nearly Rs 14 lakh crore to them.

Asian peers Shanghai and Nikkei settled down by 0.23 per cent and 0.18 per cent, respectively. On the other hand, Hang Seng closed higher by 0.12 per cent.
3.10 pm: The 30-share Sensex was trading 311 points down at 27,773.84, while Nifty was down 99.25 points at 8,579.
2.28 pm: Sensex was down 258 points at 27826. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap index were also trading down by 0.84 per cent and 0.88 per cent, respectively.
2.03 pm: Mahindra & Mahindra shares fell over 2 per cent despite the company reported 12 per cent rise in standalone net profit at Rs 955.21 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2016 against Rs 850.09 crore in the same quarter last year. Read more
1.22 pm: Jubilant Life Sciences shares surged over 8 per cent after it reported 25.85 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 164.02 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2016 against Rs 130.33 crore in the same quarter last year.
12.37 pm: Sensex was trading 223 points down at 27,861. Sectorwise, the BSE Oil & Gas index was trading down by 1.58 per cent, followed by BSE Bankex (down 1.18 per cent), BSE Auto index (down 1.06 per cent), BSE Realty index (down 0.99 per cent) and BSE Consumer Durables (down 0.96 per cent). Rest all other sectoral indices were also trading in red.
11.29 am: Among the 30-components in the BSE Sensex pack, 25 were trading in red. However, Adani Ports were trading higher by 7 per cent. Sensex was down 251 points at 27833. Nifty was down 0.91 per cent, or 78.70 points at 8,599.55.

10.15 am: In the 50-share index, Grasim, Lupin, Bharti Infratel, Ambuja Cement and ACC were down between 1.40 per cent and 5.03 per cent. On the other hand, Adani Ports, NTPC, TCS, Bajaj Auto and Bharti Airtel were up between 0.52 per cent and 5.04 per cent. NSE Nifty was down 45.50 points at 8632.75. Sensex was trading 152 points down at 27932.66.
9.25 am: Aptech Limited shares were trading 3.34 per cent higher on Wednesday after ace investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala on Tuesday bought on 7,00,000 shares of the company. Read more
9.16 am: Indian Overseas Bank shares were trading 4.40 per cent down at Rs 26.10 in the early trade post Q1 results.
9.15 am: Sensex opened 48.20 points up at 28133.36. Nifty opened 8.45 points up at 8,686.70.
PRE-OPENING
The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty are likely to open in green on Wednesday tracking SGX Nifty and mixed global cues. At 7.53 am (IST), SGX Nifty was trading 11 points, or 0.13 per cent, up at 8,718.
Asian peer Hang Seng was trading higher by 0.54 per cent in the morning trade, while Shanghai and Nikkei were down by 0.05 per cent and 0.37 per cent, respectively.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average index gained marginally 3.76 points, or 0.02 per cent, to 18,533.05 on Tuesday. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index inched up by 0.85 point, or 0.04 per cent, to 2,181.74. The Nasdaq Composite index gained 12.34 points to 5,225.48.
Back home, benchmark BSE Sensex slipped by 97.41 points on Tuesday and snapped a three-day rally after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) maintained status quo in its third bi-monthly monetary policy review.
Shares of United Bank of India and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) will remain in focus today. M&M will announce its financial results for the quarter ended June 30, 2016 on Wednesday. United Bank on Tuesday registered a 26.6 per cent fall in net profit at Rs 38.32 crore for first quarter ended June 30, 2016 against Rs 52.22 crore in the same quarter last year.
