The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Thursday that it will release the Rs 200 currency note as soon as on Friday. The new note belongs to the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series and will bear the signature of Urjit Patel, the Governor of the RBI. The new note contains the image of Mahatma Gandhi on the obverse side and a motif of Sanchi Stupa on the reverse side in order to depict the cultural heritage of India. RBI has kept The base colour of the note as Bright Yellow and it also has other designs, geometric patterns aligning with the overall colour scheme, both at the obverse and reverse. As per the press release issued by RBI, the banknotes in the denomination of Rs 200 issued by the Reserve Bank in the earlier series will continue to be legal tender.

The Rs 200 note was introduced as a near variation of the Renard Series in their currency system. As per this system currency, denominations should be in the ratio of 1:2 and 1: 2.5. This means that a denomination should be twice its preceding denomination. The optimal system of currency should enable the probability of proffering exact change. As per the currency denomination used in our country 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 2000, the Rs 200 note was the only missing link, as per the RBI.
