Shane D. Tamura, the 27-year-old suspected gunman behind the deadly shooting spree at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, reportedly left behind a multi-page sunote that could offer insight into his motive. Tamura killed four people, including an NYPD officer, before fatally shooting himself on the 33rd floor of the 44-storey high-rise on Monday.
According to sources cited by the New York Post, the note appears to blame the sport of football for his mental health struggles, referencing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition linked to repeated head trauma. The building where the tragedy included the headquarters of the NFL, which Tamura seemed to deliberately target.
The former athlete also allegedly requested that his brain be studied after death. As reported by CNN, Tamura’s note makes mention of former Pittsburgh Steelers player Terry Long, who also suffered from CTE and died by suicide in 2006 after ingesting antifreeze.
What is chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) explained?
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive brain condition believed to be linked to repeated head injuries or blows to the head. Over time, it can lead to dementia, although with the right support, its symptoms can be managed. In the early stages, symptoms may be subtle or go unnoticed, often including mood changes such as depression or suicidal thoughts, personality shifts, and behavioural changes like aggression and mood swings. As the condition progresses, more noticeable cognitive issues can emerge, including short-term memory loss, confusion, disorientation, and difficulties with planning and organisation. Movement problems may also develop. These symptoms typically appear gradually, often around a decade after repeated head injuries, and may either worsen slowly or remain stable for several years before deteriorating further.
What does the suicide note indicate?
A suicide note found in the suspect’s back pocket claimed he was suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), according to CNN, which cited an unnamed source familiar with the investigation. According to CNN, the note read: “Football gave me CTE and it caused me to drink a gallon of antifreeze. You can’t go against the NFL; they’ll squash you.” It also included a request for the suspect’s brain to be studied.
