The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a series of significant service improvements designed to make it easier and faster for Americans to access benefits and manage their accounts.

These changes are part of a broader digital transformation at the agency aimed at modernising customer service and expanding online access for beneficiaries and applicants alike. More than 70 million Americans depend on Social Security payments every month, making these updates especially important for a large portion of the US population.

What are the key improvements?

In a press release, the SSA said one of the key improvements made is expanded access to the online ‘My Social Security’ portal. Previously, the system was unavailable for significant portions of the week, but upgrades now allow account holders to access their personal Social Security accounts around the clock. This means users can view and manage their benefits any time without being limited by offline periods.

In addition to better online access, the agency has reported substantial performance gains in its call centre services. Call response rates increased by about 65% in the 2025 fiscal year compared to the prior year. The average time it takes to answer calls on the National 800 Number has dropped into the single digits, and roughly 90% of inquiries can be handled through self-service tools or by scheduling callbacks rather than waiting on hold, according to Newsweek.

Improvements have also been seen in field offices. Average wait times for visitors have dropped nearly 30%, and those with scheduled appointments now wait an average of just six minutes to be helped by an SSA representative. These changes represent important steps toward delivering more efficient in-person service across the country.

Improvements also seen in reducing backlog

The agency has also made substantial progress in reducing backlogs, particularly for disability claims. The number of pending disability claims has fallen by about one third from its record high in mid-2024, easing delays for applicants waiting on important determinations.

When is the next Social Security payment due?

Beneficiaries will next be able to claim their social security payment on January 21. As per latest data, the average monthly benefit for a retiree is expected to be around $2,071, while a retired couple can expect a combined average of $3,208.
