An employee shared on Reddit how his sick leave on Friday turned into what felt like a “court trial,” after his boss demanded proof for his absence. The employee, who goes by “Which_Historian_4581” on Reddit, recounted the exchange with his manager, which ended with the boss leaving the room like a “dramatic Bollywood villain”.

“How my Friday leave became a court trial,” read the title of the Reddit post. The employee went on to explain why he had applied for leave, saying he injured his hand after hitting it against a rod while trying to board a local train.

“The pain that night was so bad I couldn’t even sleep,” he wrote, adding that this led him to request sick leave. “I texted my manager that I’d be taking the day off because I needed to get an X-ray done,” he said.

The boss granted him sick leave. When he visited the doctor, he was prescribed medicines, saying that there was no need for an X-ray. “X-ray ki zarurat hi nahi [No need for an X-ray]. Two medicines and you’ll be fine.”

When he returned to the office on Monday, his boss asked to see the X-ray. He explained that the doctor had said there was no need for one, but his boss accused him of lying just to take a day off.

He also claimed that his boss walked out of the room like a dramatic Bollywood villain.

Here’s the conversation between boss and employee per the Reddit post:

My manager goes, “X-ray dikha.” [Show me the X-ray.]

I said, “X-ray nahi nikala.” [I didn’t get an X-ray.]

He goes, “Toh chutti kyu liya?” [Then why did you take leave?]

I said, “Mujhe laga X-ray ki need hogi, par doctor ne mana kar diya. Agar prescription chahiye toh woh dikhata hoon.” [I thought an X-ray would be needed, but the doctor refused. If you want, I can show the prescription.]

Then he drops the dialogue of the decade: “Tujhe dawa ki nahi, dua ki zarurat hai.” [You don’t need medicine, you need prayers.]

I replied, “Kuch logon ko toh dua bhi na lage toh accha hai.” [For some people, it’s better if even prayers don’t work.]

He said, “Jhooth bolke chutti leta hai.” [He lies to take leave.]

I ended it with: “Ab jaisi jiski soch.” [Well, everyone thinks as they wish.] And he walked out of the room like a dramatic Bollywood villain.

How did Reddit users react?

Reddit users, as expected, quickly flocked to the comments section of the post that was shared on the platform’s “Indian Workplace” and shared their thoughts.

“You did the right thing; more people should follow this,” one Reddit user said. Another added, “When I take leave, I don’t give any justification. It’s called paid time off for a reason.”

A third commented, “I am sort of a manager, team lead. I assume when people take leave on Fridays, that it’s something fishy. I even joke about it in meetings that tomorrow is Friday hai, and employees will come up with reasons there is some problem with the Internet, the electricity went off, etc.. taught me to avoid keeping deadlines on Fridays. Also, there is no need to be filmy if a person is off for a day. It’s his right.”
