A Reddit user shared that his uncle, while sifting through old files, came across a bond he purchased in 1995. Wondering what those long-forgotten shares might be worth today, he turned to Reddit for answers, asking the community to do the maths. Although the investment was modest, around Rs 20,000 in the 90s, many suggested it would now be valued in lakhs, with some even estimating it could run into crores. The bond has become a compelling reminder that sometimes, the most powerful investor is simply time itself.
UTI bond from 90s
“My uncle found this while looking for some documents. What would be the value of it today?” a Reddit user, who goes by the handle “@Warking223” online, said while sharing the picture of the bond from Unit Trust of India (UTI).
The document said that it is non-transferable and was issued under the Retirement Benefit Plan. “Issued in accordance with the provisions of the Retirement Benefit Plan formulated under the Retirement Benefit Unit Scheme,” the document stated.
Per the document, the man bought 2,000 units, each with a face value of 10 per unit. It was issued in 1995 in Bombay (now Mumbai).
Reddit users had a field day calculating its worth
Responding to the post, one Reddit user said that they believe that the current value of the bond is 23 lakh. Another suggested that it could be worth seven crores now. But is it really the case? Stay with us till the end of this article as we reveal the “current” value of the bond.
“As I see online, the current NAV is around ₹50.89 for the Regular Plan and ₹55.05 for the Direct Plan. So, it would have become 5x or 5.5x value based on the type of the plan, if it was bought at a face value (NFO). You can check with the AMC directly,” joined yet another.
One social media user said that it is a “retirement benefit plan”. The original poster responded to this comment and said that he is aware. “Yeah I’m aware. As there no interest rate documented on it, how will the maturity on it be calculated?”
A Reddit user said, “Around Rs 89,000 since one of my knowns has taken this RBP plan….”
Is the UTI bond really worth crores?
Despite the buzz on Reddit that the bond is worth crores today, the numbers tell a very different story. Based on the current Net Asset Value (NAV) of around Rs 50.71 as of December 12, 2025, the investment today is a little over Rs 1 lakh. While it has grown about five times the original amount over 30 years, it is nowhere close to the eye-popping “crores” figure. Having said that, the bond hasn’t turned into a fortune, but it does offer long-term, realistic returns.
Here’s how the bond stands at around Rs 1 lakh versus the “crores” people imagined.
1- In 1995, the man bought 2,000 units, thereby investing Rs 20,000 since the face value of each unit was Rs 10.
2- If we calculate the Current Price (NAV) as of Dec 2025, it stands at Rs 50.71.
3- So, if we multiply 2,000 units by the current value, it stands at Rs 1,01,420.
