A 24-year-old software professional from Bangalore posted on Reddit asking for a financial “reality check” and even invited a roast but what he got was mostly praise for his budgeting and financial discipline.
The Reddit user is a 24 year old male with over 3 years of experience. He earns ₹1.3 lakh per month in take-home salary and lives alone in a 1BHK flat which costs him ₹25,000 in rent. He sends ₹20,000 back home every month and invests ₹50,000. He also spends ₹20,000 on personal wants and ₹15,000 on daily needs like food and commute.
“Trying to Actually Live a Little”
In his post, he wrote, “I spent the last 3 years making ₹60K/month, sending ₹20K home, investing ₹20K and barely had anything left for myself after rent. So now that I finally have a better income, I’m trying to actually live a little, buy things I like, stay in a place I enjoy coming home to and not feel guilty about spending on myself.”
He shared his current investment portfolio which includes ₹2.5 lakh in mutual funds, ₹3 lakh in direct equity and ₹50,000 in digital gold – total ₹6 lakh. He also has ₹2.05 lakh in his EPFO account. He has no debts or EMIs and tracks his expenses daily. He said he doesn’t live alone for saving money but because he values solitude.
Reddit Users Offer Praise and Caution
Instead of roasting, fellow Redditors responded with encouragement. One user commentedwrote, “Considering your age you’re doing great. Nothing to roast here just get health insurance and term life insurance! Also don’t companies nowadays provide that? I work in a startup getting 1.25L but I don’t get the health one. I did take a term insurance though!”
Another user echoed similar sentiments while also offering long-term advice, “At 24m, you’re doing good. You have created a good foundation. Spending a bit on yourself is necessary. This is the age to splurge a bit. But don’t increase that splurge any further considering the future expenses such as marriage, kids, home, car. Such expenses can be planned and target-based investments be done.”
