In a remarkable display of mental prowess, a 20-year old Vishvaa Rajakumar from India who has been declared as winner in the Memory League World Championship, as per a report by The New York Times. In this competition, participants have to memorise and recount sequences of numbers, images and words. His record shattering performance showed him recollecting all the 80 digits in just 13.5 seconds-a feat that showcases his extraordinary cognitive abilities.

Rajakumar’s secret tool

The competition took place in early February was participated by top memory athletes who use sophisticated techniques to recall the digits. Rajkumar’s secret technique is the ancient ‘’memory palace’’ technique, a method tracing back to Roman times. This strategy will involve linking information with specific locations in an imagined place like rooms in a house. ‘’If I use the memory palace, I can easily recall which came first and which came second, ’Rajkumar explained it to NYT. ‘’This way, I can recollect all the 50 stories I generated for 100 words without confusion.’’

Rajakumar gave credit for his sharp memory not only of stringent practices but also of taking care of his physical well-being. He stated that hydration is very essential because it  helps the brain. For faster recalling, drinking sufficient water improves the ability to memorise the words, he added.

His championship triumph was an emotional moment for Rajakumar. ‘’Yes. I do realise how amazing it is. I was crying,’’ he told NYT while commenting on his achievement. His dedication and passion to master the skill of memory techniques have now cemented his place as the world’s best.

Rajakumar future plans

For world rank 1 memory athlete, the next goal is to become a memory trainer  and build a memory institution in India. He wants to teach others the techniques that helped him in his outstanding achievement.
