A Reddit user recently opened up about struggling with life in the US, saying, “No matter how much I look at it you can’t or I can’t substitute dollars for my mental health. I don’t want to waste my youth like this and I have made my mind to move back asap. This might seem desperate but I’ve thought of this from every angle and I don’t want to be in such a life. Being near to friends and family back home is the way forward for me basically.” The title of the post was, “I feel my life in the US has come to an end.’
Seeking Advice: Balancing Mental Health and Career
The post sparked a range of responses from the Reddit community, with many users weighing in on the difficult choice of returning home versus staying abroad. One user wrote, “It all depends on a case-by-case basis. There’s no right or wrong answers – certainly not one answer that fits everyone. So you have to do what’s best for you.
Having said all that, going from US to India is a HUGE step. So if you are feeling homesick or burnt out, then maybe take a quick trip to India, to be with family / friends back home & recharge & get back to the US. If you are afraid of layoffs or visa issues & can’t take time off, then go domestically within your city – to Indian Restaurants or Indian Festivals or Desi Meetups, and try to get some sense of community or belonging there. And try to recharge your batteries that way. Or go celebrate Diwali or go to a Bollywood night out at a Pub.
At the end of the day, if you do want to go back to India for your own various reasons, that’s fine. But because it’s a BIG decision, try to do everything you can to remain in the US & satisfy your Indian feelings. After exhausting all possibilities, if you still feel you want to head back, then that’s fine. If anything, it will give you a greater sense of clarity: that no matter what you tried: the answer of going back remained unchanged.”
Reddit Users Support Personal Choice
Other users offered simpler words of encouragement. One commented, “I think you made a right call.. good luck with your peace!!”
The discussion highlights the growing awareness among expatriates about mental health, homesickness, and the challenges of balancing career ambitions abroad with personal happiness. Many suggest that short visits or local cultural engagement may help ease the struggle, but ultimately the decision to stay or return rests on individual circumstances.
