Good news for Aadhaar users! The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has further eased the process to update one’s mobile number. Updating mobile number in Aadhaar used to be a big headache — long queues, paperwork and waiting. But now things have changed.

The UIDAI has partnered with the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) to make this process incredibly simple and fast. Now, you don’t need any forms, photocopies, or documents to update your number. All you need is your fingerprint for authentication, which makes the whole process completely paperless and secure.

How to Update Your Mobile Number

You can get your mobile number updated in just a few minutes at:

Your nearest Post Office or an IPPB Centre.

Your doorstep, by simply calling your local Postman or Grameen Dak Sevak (Rural Postal Service Provider). They carry the necessary device and can verify you using your fingerprint right where you are.

This doorstep service from IPPB is particularly helpful in emergencies, like when someone is hospitalised and needs their Aadhaar updated immediately to access insurance benefits.

Why Updating Your Mobile Number Matters

Keeping your latest mobile number linked to Aadhaar is crucial. It’s essential for:

Accessing government schemes like PDS and DBT.

Getting quick security via OTP-based verification for online transactions and banking.

Enabling services like getting a new mobile SIM, applying for a Driving License, verifying Income Tax Returns, and using EPFO services.

Big News for Children’s Aadhaar Biometrics

In other news, the UIDAI has made a fantastic change for children. Children must get their biometric details (fingerprints, iris, and photo) updated at two stages: first when they turn five and again when they turn fifteen. These are called Mandatory Biometric Updates (MBU).

Previously, there was a fee if you missed the free update window. However, the UIDAI has now waived the charge for all children between the ages of 5 and 17 for one full year, starting from October 1, 2025. This free update is expected to benefit nearly 6 crore children.

Making sure your child’s biometrics are updated on time is very important, as it guarantees they have smooth access to critical services like school admissions, scholarships, and other Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes.
