Indian equity indices are expected to open on muted lines. The Asian indices were trading mixed. The GIFT Nifty was up 25 points or 0.10% at 24,800. Here are key global cues to watch before the market opens, including crude oil prices, FII and DII data, etc.
Earlier on Tuesday, the NSE Nifty 50 closed the session 262 points or 1.05% lower at 24,683.90, while the BSE Sensex fell 872.98 points or 1.06% to close at 81,186.44.

Asian Markets
Asia-Pacific markets were mixed on Wednesday morning. Japan’s key index, Nikkei 225, was down 0.22%, while South Korea’s Kospi rose 1.11%. The Asia Dow was up 0.74% at 3,635.32. The Chinese benchmark Shanghai Composite was trading flat at 3,380.
US markets
The US key indices fell in Tuesday’s session as investors dumped tech stocks. The S&P 500 lost 0.39% to end at 5,940.46, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.38% and closed at 19,142.71. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 114.83 points, or 0.27%, finishing at 42,677.24.
US dollar
The US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the dollar’s value against a basket of six foreign currencies, was down 0.18% at 99.94 on Tuesday morning. The index evaluates the strength or weakness of the US dollar in comparison to major currencies. The basket contains currencies such as the British Pound, Euro, Swedish Krona, Japanese Yen, Swiss Franc, etc. The rupee depreciated 0.26% to close at 85.63 to the dollar on May 20.
Crude oil
The crude oil prices traded on a flat note on Wednesday. WTI crude prices were trading at $62.93, up by 1.45%, while Brent crude prices were trading at $65.28, up by 1.38%, on Wednesday morning.
FII, DII data
Foreign institutional investors (FII) were the net sellers of shares worth Rs 10,016.10 crore. Meanwhile, the Domestic institutional investors (DII) were the net buyers of shares worth Rs 6,738.39 crore on May 20, 2024, according to the provisional data available on the NSE.
Gold rate today
The gold price has surged a bit on Wednesday, hovering near its all-time high. The rate for 24-carat gold today is Rs 95,320 per 10 grams. The rate of gold has fallen by 2.89% in the last week. The 22 kt gold rate today is Rs 87,377 per 10 grams. The 18-carat gold price today is Rs 71,490.
Best and worst performing business groups
The Emami Group’s market capitalisation fell the most in Tuesday’s weak trade, dropping more than 5%. In the list of Emami Group stocks, all three closed the session in the red. Emami Group was followed by Essel Group, whose market cap dipped almost 3.47%, Hero Group’s mcap pulled back 3.12%, and others. However, the Sakthi (Mahalingam) Group’s market cap surged the most, gaining 1.62%.
Sectors that surged most in Monday’s trade
The shipping sector dropped the most in Tuesday’s trade. In the list of shipping stocks, which has a total of 14 stocks, 11 closed the session in the red. The list of beverages and non-alcoholic stocks pulled the sector’s market cap down by 2.87%. The list of Automobile stocks followed suit, falling 2.66% in market cap.
