Frauds using artificial intelligence (AI) to trick people are on the rise, and one common example is the AI voice scam. In this case, criminals use AI to copy the voices of people we trust, like family members. They then use these fake voices to emotionally manipulate victims, leading to financial losses. In one such case, a 59-year-old woman lost her Rs 1.4 lakh by mistaking the caller for her nephew.
The story, unfolded by TOI, gives details of this woman living in Hyderabad who lost her money after she got a call from a caller who sounded exactly like her nephew who lived in Canada. She said that the caller sounded in distress and was asking money immediately.
The woman said that she received a call late night from an individual claiming to be her nephew. Disturbingly, the caller said that he had been in an accident and was on the verge of being arrested. The person, who exactly mimicked the woman’s nephew’s voice and spoke in their native Punjabi language with remarkable accuracy, pleaded with her to transfer money urgently. The caller emphasized the need for secrecy, urging the woman not to disclose their conversation to anyone.
“He sounded just like my nephew and spoke exactly in the Punjabi we speak at home with all the nuances. He called me late in the night and said he had an accident and was about to be jailed. He requested me to transfer money and keep this conversation a secret,” the woman recounted.
The woman transferred the money immediately into the man’s account only to realise that she had been scammed using AI voice scam. The police have warned people about this rising AI voice scam and asked people to take caution so that they don’t fall prey to such scam.
