Boston Dynamics, leading engineering and robotics design company, has integrated the AI language model ChatGPT into its Spot robot dog, giving it the ability to speak. This integration was demonstrated in a video released by Boston Dynamics on YouTube.
In the video, Spot is seen wearing googly eyes and a small hat, and it speaks with a variety of different personalities, including a “Fancy Butler” personality. Spot is able to answer questions in a comprehensive and informative way, and even move its mouth to make it seem like it’s talking.

“We’re excited to continue exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and robotics. These two technologies are a great match. Robots provide a fantastic way to “ground” large foundation models in the real world. By the same token, these models can help provide cultural context, general common-sense knowledge, and flexibility that could be useful for many robotics tasks—for example, being able to assign a task to a robot just by talking to it would help reduce the learning curve for using these systems,” the company said in a blog post. It says that the integration of ChatGPT into Spot is a proof of concept for the robotics applications of foundational models.

There are a number of potential benefits to giving robots the ability to speak. For example, robots could be used to provide customer service, give tours, or teach classes. Robots could also be used to provide companionship to people who are lonely or isolated.
