Free messaging and calling app Viber on Wednesday announced that it has than 40 million registered users in India — its largest userbase globally. However, the number of active Viber users in India may vary. Viber commenced its operations in India in December 2013 with 13 million users. Viber has over 516 million unique users in 193 countries.
“We have crossed 40 million registered users, and India is now our biggest market. It’s a key milestone for us and this is a clear sign of the surging popularity of the platform,” Viber India Country Head Anubhav Nayyar said.
Of late, Viber has added multiple features taking into account the requirements of the Indian users.

One of the key releases last year was Viber Public Chats, a feature that allows users to discover, share and interact with conversations, communities and content on mobile.
Viber was acquired by Japan’s Rakuten for USD 900 million in February 2014 and its competitors include apps like LINE, Hike, WhatsApp and Nimbuzz.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp revamped its Android application and also introduced free voice-calling to iOS.
