The rivalry between tech billionaires Elon Musk and Sam Altman escalated further this week, with Musk taking to X (formerly Twitter) to accuse the OpenAI CEO of dishonesty. Musk’s tweet, “Scam Altman lies as easily as he breathes,” was posted in response to a critical thread by user Dillon Loomis, who detailed a series of allegations against Altman’s integrity and leadership.
The tweet on X highlighted a major claims against Altman, including accusations about using his platform for alleged manipulative behavior and dishonesty. Loomis’s post reads:
“Sam Altman wants to talk about Elon and X’s alleged behavior? Lol. Ok, Sam.
Remember when a former OpenAI board member said you were ousted because ‘you were lying so much that we just couldn’t believe the things Sam was telling us’
Or when Ilya and Mira raised concerns about your history of manipulative behavior
Or when a former employee described you as ‘a person of low integrity who had directly lied to employees’
Or what about OpenAI’s restrictive NDA’s that forfeit employees’ equity if they criticized the company?
Or when ChatGPT tried to influence the election?
I could continue…
There’s always been something off about Sam, he can’t be trusted. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.”
AI Bias Claims and Election Influence Controversy
An image attached to the thread showed ChatGPT’s differing responses to requests to support political candidates: when asked to convince the user to vote for Donald Trump, ChatGPT refused assistance, but when asked about Kamala Harris, it provided reasons to consider her. This sparked fresh debate about AI neutrality and bias.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk also targeted Apple, accusing the tech giant of making it “impossible” for apps to compete fairly with OpenAI’s ChatGPT on the App Store. Musk criticized Apple for allegedly blocking the promotion of his platform X and the AI app Grok, despite both apps’ significant popularity.
Musk Challenges Apple Over App Store Practices
In a post pinned to his X profile, Musk questioned Apple’s decision not to feature X or Grok in the App Store’s “Must Have” section, saying, “X is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps.” Despite this, ChatGPT remains the most downloaded free app in the UK, with Grok ranking closely behind, while X does not appear in the top 40.
The feud between Musk and Altman underscores the competitive tension between the co-founders of OpenAI, who now lead rival AI ventures. Altman responded by linking to a Platformer report alleging that Musk has been artificially boosting his own posts’ visibility on X.
This ongoing battle highlights not only personal animosity but also the broader struggles for dominance in the rapidly evolving AI and tech platform landscape.
