OpenAI’s much-awaited text-to-video generation model seems to have been leaked before its official launch. Reportedly, an unidentified group uploaded an AI video model, claiming that it was OpenAI’s Sora. But was this really ‘Sora,’ or was it some kind of prank? Let’s take a look at what really happened.

Sora Preview Gets Leaked

On November 26, a listing on Hugging Face surfaced, claiming to provide public access to OpenAI’s Sora model. The anonymous group behind the listing also created a front-end interface, allowing users to generate AI videos. The details hinted that its backend server was hosted on the AI company’s domain, and its name suggested it was a Turbo variant. The model was available on the platform for three hours before access was closed.

But who were the ‘people’ in this unidentified/secret group? It is suggested that the model was leaked by artists who were protesting the lack of adequate compensation for their labor by OpenAI. Initially, OpenAI’s text-to-video generation AI model, Sora, was limited to select testers. Now, it was available to the public for a few hours. In a letter titled ‘Dear Corporate AI Overlords,’ the testers said they had received access to Sora. The letter further highlighted that it had been written by ‘early testers, red teamers, and creative partners.’

Furthermore, in the letter, the group wrote that they felt they were being used to advertise the AI model to other artists. They also noted that OpenAI’s process of approving and selecting their contributions for screening was unfair. The artists also said that they are not anti-AI but support open-source software such as Mochi 1, CogVideoX, LTX Video, and Pyramid Flow, among others. In response to the mishap, OpenAI issued a statement and confirmed that Sora’s access was still limited to selected people.

Decoding Sora

So, what is Sora, and what’s all the hype about? Sora is OpenAI’s upcoming text-to-video model. The model generates short video clips based on user prompts. It can also extend existing short videos. For example, if you want to create a birthday video, you can simply write a prompt like “Create a birthday video,” and Sora’s AI-powered video generator will create a beautiful video for you. You won’t need to spend extra hours creating a video on your own — you can just take the help of AI.
