MediaTek today launched the Dimensity 8400, a new smartphone chip designed to deliver flagship Dimensity 9400-like generative AI performance and efficiency at more affordable prices. This new chipset brings its advanced “all big core” CPU design to the “premium” market for the first time. The wording seems to suggest, it’s meant for upper mid-rangers, more commonly known as flagship killers.

The Dimensity 8400 boasts an 8-core Cortex-A725 CPU. It can clock 3.25GHz, MediaTek claims (the Dimensity 9400 can go higher up to 3.63GHz). The configuration delivers a 41 percent boost in multi-core performance compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 8300, while simultaneously achieving a 44 percent reduction in peak power consumption.

The GPU, which is a Mali-G720, meanwhile offers 24 percent faster graphics while consuming 42 percent less power than before. MediaTek pairs it with a Frame Rate Converter (MFRC) for smoother gameplay and Adaptive Gaming Technology (MAGT) 3.0 for real-time optimisation of game and app performance.

As expected, one of the standout features of the Dimensity 8400 is its focus on generative AI.  The integrated NPU 880 supports large language models (LLM), small language models (SLM), and multimodal large language models (LMM), enabling users to experience the latest AI applications like AI-powered translation, text rewriting, contextual replies, AI recording, and media generation. Furthermore, the chip also incorporates MediaTek’s Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE), first introduced in the Dimensity 9400, to help streamline the creation of more sophisticated and personalised AI applications for devices.

Beyond AI and gaming, the Dimensity 8400 integrates MediaTek’s Imagiq 1080 ISP with advanced features like QPD remosaic technology for improved light capture, faster and more accurate focusing, and high-resolution image output. The chip also supports HDR video recording across the entire zoom range. Other notable features include: a 5G-A modem with support for 3CC-CA and speeds up to 5.17Gbps and support for WQHD+ displays with refresh rates up to 144Hz and dual-screen configurations.
