The Maha Kumbh Mela in 2025 is introducing a new tech twist, combining traditional spirituality with modern blockchain technology. For the first time ever, Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) will be part of the event, offering participants a unique digital experience alongside the traditional pilgrimage.

What are NFTs?

NFTs, or Non-Fungible Tokens, are unique digital assets that are stored on a secure online system called a blockchain. Unlike cryptocurrencies, which are interchangeable, each NFT is one-of-a-kind and can represent things like digital artwork, collectibles, or even access to special events. In the case of the Maha Kumbh, these NFTs will be used as digital collectibles and special credentials tied to the event.

How IRCTC is involved

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has partnered with a blockchain company, Chaincode Consulting, to bring NFTs into the Maha Kumbh experience. This collaboration is designed to allow devotees and visitors to connect with the event through a digital platform. By using NFTs, attendees will have access to exclusive digital items, such as collectible images, virtual tickets, and even personalised experiences related to the festival.

Enhancing the Maha Kumbh experience

These NFTs will be tracked on the Polygon blockchain, which ensures they are safe, secure, and verifiable. Through the platform, people can also enjoy interactive quizzes about the festival and Indian mythology, giving them a deeper understanding of the spiritual significance of the event. This digital shift will also enable people from around the world to participate in the Maha Kumbh, even if they cannot attend in person.

AI navigation and other tech features

In addition to NFTs, this year’s Maha Kumbh will use AI-powered navigation tools to help pilgrims find their way around the vast event grounds. The Kumbh Mela mobile app will guide visitors to their campsites and suggest the best routes to take. These technological advancements aim to make the experience smoother and more accessible.

Advanced surveillance and crowd management

To ensure the safety of the millions attending, the event will feature cutting-edge surveillance technology. Over 2,750 AI-powered CCTV cameras will monitor the vast Mela grounds, offering real-time tracking of the crowd’s movement. With facial recognition and number plate recognition systems in place, authorities can efficiently manage security and handle crowd congestion.

Alongside, for the first time, underwater drones will be deployed to monitor the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers meet. These drones, equipped with advanced imaging technology, will provide live data to the central command center, improving safety for those who enter the water. Additionally, the introduction of drone-based monitoring systems for disaster management ensures quick responses in case of emergencies, making the entire event more secure and organised.
