Google Chat has unveiled a new feature called Huddles which is powered by Google Meet.  Huddles allows users to initiate informal meetings directly from Chat, making real-time collaboration more accessible and convenient. Unlike traditional video calls that may require jumping into separate platforms or lengthy meetings, Huddles integrate seamlessly into Google Chat, enabling a smooth conversation without interrupting workflow.

Huddles begins with an audio call by default, but users can switch to video or share their screen during the conversation. Additionally, users can easily resize or drag the Huddle window for better usability.

Google says that its Huddles aim to reduce meeting fatigue, especially for hybrid workers who may be overwhelmed by constant video conferences. Instead of leaving a conversation thread to attend a scheduled meeting, Huddles keep users within their Chat environment, streamlining communication. This feature competes directly with Slack’s “Huddles,” which has offered similar functionality since 2021, allowing users to initiate quick, informal audio and video calls. Slack enhanced this feature a year later by adding video support. Similarly, Microsoft Teams, another strong competitor, has also integrated real-time communication tools.

How to start a Huddle in Google Chat

To start a Huddle, users simply click the video icon in the top-right corner of their Chat window and select Start a Huddle. From there, the Huddle begins as an audio-only call, but video can be turned on at any time. If someone invites you to a Huddle, you’ll see a chat notification with the option to join. Huddles are available in direct messages, group chats, and spaces.

Admin and user settings

For organisations with Google Workspace, administrators can manage access to Huddles by enabling or disabling Meet within the domain. End users, however, can easily start or join Huddles as long as they have access to the feature.

Rollout and availability

Huddles will be gradually rolled out starting November 27, 2024, with the full rollout expected by December 2025. It will be available to various Google Workspace plans, including Business Starter, Standard, Plus, and Enterprise editions, among others. The feature will also be available for Google’s nonprofit users.
