Time is up for Google’s One VPN. The Google One VPN service, which is one of several VPNs that Google offers, is shutting down. Google is known to kill off products from time to time, more commonly when it notices not many people are probably using it and the same seems to be true for the One VPN service as well.

Is One VPN dead?

Google One can be defined as Google’s cloud storage subscription plan allowing users to buy extra storage for Gmail, Drive, and Google Photos. Google offers a total of three VPN services. One is the general Google One VPN for Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. Then there’s the Pixel VPN by Google One, which comes with Pixel phones and the Google Fi VPN that is exclusively available to Google Fi Android and iOS customers.

The next ‘One’!

Industry experts believe that Google One VPN had the potential to be the most flexible till now. In spite of the widest support it got,  its shutdown represents Google ending VPN support for Windows and Mac. However, the Pixel and Fi VPNs still remain active and might get a new branding.

The Google One VPN is shutting down because “people simply weren’t using it,” as per insights from a Google spokesperson. The Windows client is expected to have been super buggy and it’s probably easier to close it rather than fixing. Furthermore, no exact date has been given regarding the shutdown. However, a message was put up in the official website saying that the VPN will be phased out “later in 2024.”
