Richest techie family in Bengaluru with net worth Rs 2.21 lakh crore isn’t Infosys’ Narayan Murthy

Wipro founder Azim Premji and his family continue to rule Bengaluru’s wealth rankings, emerging as the richest in the tech capital with a net worth of Rs 2.21 lakh crore, according to the Hurun India Rich List 2025.

The report stated that India added billionaires at an unmatched pace, as 1,687 people have joined the 1,000 crore club, pushing the country’s total number of billionaires past 350. Bengaluru accounted for 116 of them, ranking in the third slot among cities after Mumbai and New Delhi.

“Azim Premji and family recorded the sharpest surge in the top 10, rising from 34th to eighth with a remarkable six-fold increase in wealth, reaching Rs 2,21 lakh crore,’’ Hurun report stated. 

From a vegetable oil manufacturer to a global IT powerhouse

Azim Premji, Founder-Chairman of Wipro, turned a vegetable oil manufacturer into India’s most reputed technology and consulting firm. Over the decades, he has been known for his ethical leadership, restraint in lifestyle, and philanthropy through the Azim Premji Foundation, which works in the area of education, rural upliftment, and skill development.

The sharp rise in Premji’s net worth highlights not only Wipro’s global operations but also the overall recovery of India’s software services industry. Bengaluru has long been considered the country’s Silicon Plateau and continues to dominate as a generator of technology wealth, innovators, and investors shaping India’s billionaire sector.

Bengaluru’s billionaire families

Apart from the Wipro founder, several other Bengaluru-based business leaders have been listed prominently on this year’s ranking:

1.     Azim Premji and family: Rs 2,21,250 crore (Wipro, Software & Services)

2.     Nithin Kamath and family: Rs 40, 020 crore (Zerodha, Financial Services).

3.     N R Narayana Murthy and family: Rs 32, 150 crore (Infosys, Software Services)

4.     S Gopalkrishnan and family: Rs 30, 740 crore (Infosys, Software Services)

5.     Raja Bagmane: Rs 31,510 (Bagmane Developers, Real Estate)

6.     Rajan Pai: Rs 34,700 crore (Manipal Education and Medical Group, Education and Healthcare)

7.     G M Rao & family: RS 31,340 crore (GMR Group, Construction and Engineering)

 
Collectively, Bengaluru’s top seven families alone command over Rs 3 lakh crore in combined net worth, highlighting the city’s prominence as the country’s tech and start-up capital.
