Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, a Padma Vibhushan awardee and a renowned Hindustani classical singer, passed away in the early hours of Thursday, October 2, 2025 at the age of 89, after battling with age-related health issues.
Mishra’s daughter Namrata Mishra told PTI that the veteran singer breathed his last around 4 am. An exponent of Banaras gharana school of Hindustani classical music, the legendary singer’s demise marks end of an era.
“He was admitted to the hospital for the last 17-18 days with age-related issues. He passed away at home this morning at around 4 am,” his daughter Namrata told PTI.
Hospitalised due to chest pain and minor heart attack
Known for his renditions of khayal, thumri, dadra, and bhajan, he took classical music to the wider audience. He had been living in Mirzapur with his youngest daughter and family for some time. Facing age-related issues for quite some time, he was admitted to Sir Sunder Lal Hospital at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) last month after complaints of chest pain and a minor heart attack, according to DD News. He was also diagnosed with a chest infection and anaemia later.

The DD News report adds that the singer’s mortal remains will be brought to Varanasi from Mirzapur on Thursday morning by 11 am, and the final rites will be conducted in Varanasi today at 7 pm.
PM Modi pays tribute
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to share his condolences:
“I am deeply saddened by the demise of the renowned classical singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra ji. He remained dedicated throughout his life to the enrichment of Indian art and culture. Along with taking classical music to the masses, he also made an invaluable contribution to establishing Indian tradition on the global stage,” said the Indian PM.
With a career spanning decades, Channulal Mishra was awarded with Padma Bhushan in the year 2010 and also got Yash Bharti Award by Uttar Pradesh government.
