The top six IITs of the country could see a rise of 20% in fresher recruitment, according to industry experts. The interview stage for the current placement cycle for the IITs will be held from Sunday.
“This year’s IIT placements showing a promising recovery, following a period of slowdown caused by the global economic downturn and challenges in the IT sector last year. With hiring sentiment improving, we are witnessing an overall increase in fresher recruitment by 20-25% compared to last year,” Krishna Vij, vice-president, TeamLease Digital said.
Precision-oriented fields like artificial intelligence, algo trading, semiconductors, defence and areas where India is pushing its manufacturing mandate are expected to be a among those driving the recruitment drive at the premier engineering institutes, experts added.
Vij also said that IITs at Bombay, Kharagpur, Delhi, Roorkee, Madras and Kanpur have taken proactive measures this year, inviting a broader mix of recruiters, including GCC’s, AI startups and niche product firms, to meet the growing demand for specialised tech talent.
“For some of the IITs, the placements could be 20%-25% higher than last year as firms from defence, auto, semiconductor, and green energy sectors look for top talent to expand their workforce,” RP Yadav, founder and chairman, Genius Consultants said.
“The salary packages for 2025 are likely to witness an upward trend, demonstrating renewed confidence in the tech job market. Average and median salaries have increased across IITs, driven by demand for high-calibre talent. Recruiter participation has also surged, with major IIT’s seeing a 12-15% rise in recruiter visits, underscoring the buoyancy in the job market and the sustained relevance of IIT graduates in meeting evolving industry needs,” Vij said.
According to data released by IIT-Bombay, FY24 placement cycle saw 1,475 offers rolled out to students participating in the on-campus placement programme. The average annual CTC was Rs 23.5 lakh per annum, the median salary was Rs 17.92 lakh per annum while 22 offers above Rs 1 crore per annum were accepted. Of the total 364 companies that took part in the recruitment drive, engineering and technology was the top recruiting sector.
After a lull last year, campus placements across engineering colleges have picked up this year as IT companies see gradual recovery in their business performance. While volume hiring may not be back to it peak days, the deficit is made up by enterprises and GCCs, both of which are ramping up their in-house tech workforce.
A recent report by the Indian Staffing Federation revealed that the total GCC workforce doubled between FY18 and FY23 and is expected to maintain the same growth rate for the next 4 years.
