As educational platforms join forces with universities, the conventional education system is being challenged, making room for a culture of practical application that ensures students not only grasp concepts but also wield them effectively in real-life scenarios In the face of a concerning statistic revealing that only 45% of Indian graduates are employable, the urgency to bridge the skill gap becomes evident, prompting academia and industries to unite. This collaborative effort reshapes education, ensuring graduates are job-ready with adaptable skills, and underscores the crucial role experiential learning plays in preparing the workforce of tomorrow.

NEP 2020: Pioneering Experiential Learning

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 lays the foundation for a transformative education system that aligns with Indian ethos, aiming to propel India towards becoming a global knowledge superpower. The policy envisions the integration of experiential learning across all levels of education, championing the philosophy of ‘learning by doing.’ This approach is not confined to theoretical understanding but emphasizes active engagement with concepts through practical application. NEP 2020 heralds a significant departure from traditional teaching methods by prioritizing experiential learning in schools and colleges alike.

In the realm of vocational and skill-based education, this pedagogical shift is gaining substantial traction. The Indian experiential learning market is poised for remarkable growth, with predictions of a CAGR of 17.1% from 2021 to 2026. This surge underscores the rising demand for education that transcends theoretical confines, equipping learners with skills they can employ confidently in their careers.

EdTech’s Role: Pioneering the Education 4.0 Era

The emergence of Education 4.0, driven by advancements in AI and ML, is reshaping education systems worldwide, and India is at the forefront of this transformation. The realm of education is no longer confined to campus walls; virtual platforms have become invaluable sources of learning. Predicted to reach approximately $9 billion by 2029, the EdTech industry is showcasing the power of AI and ML through practical applications that revolutionize how education is delivered and consumed.

According to a survey conducted by Deloitte, a substantial 82 per cent of students express a preference for experiential learning, which includes engaging in simulations and mock sessions. In comparison, around 41 per cent of students opt for traditional classroom training. Moreover, the survey findings highlight that over 90 per cent of academicians have either already implemented or intend to implement experiential learning methodologies, underscoring the growing recognition of their effectiveness in enhancing the educational experience.

AI’s Influence: Redefining the Learning Landscape

AI’s pervasive influence in India and beyond is steering an educational revolution. Educational institutions are adopting AI-powered tools to customize learning experiences, optimize curricula, and offer personalized learning paths to students. This technology empowers educators to cater to diverse learning styles and paces, ensuring each student grasps concepts effectively.

Moreover, AI-driven platforms enhance student engagement by offering interactive experiences that mimic real-life scenarios. These simulations provide students with practical exposure, allowing them to experiment, learn from mistakes, and iterate—essential skills for a rapidly changing world.

Collaboration: A Catalyst for Transformation

The ‘India’s Graduate Skill Index: 2023’ report highlights that most of India’s educational institutes need to change how they teach to give students the right skills for the future and match what industries require. Industries are also adjusting their needs, and if the teaching doesn’t change accordingly, the gap between skills and jobs widens. This is where collaborations play a significant role.

Universities globally are investing in AI research and development to foster innovation and prepare students for the demands of the modern workforce. Esteemed institutions such as Georgia Tech, Stanford, MIT, and the University of Oxford spearhead AI-focused initiatives that transcend disciplinary boundaries.

Many Indian EdTech platforms have forged partnerships with these universities, enabling students to access world-class content and expertise from the comfort of their homes. In this new educational landscape, students are no longer passive recipients of knowledge but active participants in their learning journey. Education is becoming a collaborative endeavour, where learners, educators, and technology converge to create a holistic learning experience that mirrors real-world challenges and opportunities.

The Way Forward: Paving the Path to Excellence

As the shift towards experiential learning gains momentum, the future of higher education promises a blend of theory and practice, nurturing a generation of learners prepared to navigate a dynamic world. Internships and apprenticeships allow students to engage in experiential learning, enabling them to receive valuable real-time feedback from employers regarding their skills and industry knowledge. To further enhance this learning model, an in-house career counsellor or a dedicated career service cell can serve as a complementary support system. With a focus on real-world education, the transformative potential of experiential learning holds the key to building a future-ready nation—one where knowledge is acquired and skillfully applied to shape a better tomorrow.
