Navjot Sidhu’s Awaaz-e-Punjab is set to make Punjab Assembly elections the funniest polls in India. But the joke will be on the parties opposed to Sidhu’s political front. Today’s press conference at the Chandigarh Press Club, where Sidhu announced the launch of his political front, provided a glimpse of what the election campaign is going to be like.

Announcing the political front of “like-minded” people who want to see Punjab become prosperous again, Sidhu launched an attack on his prominent rivals — The BJP-SAD combine and the AAP — in a way that for once appeared humorous as the former cricketer laced his speech with humour, sarcasm, poetry and even songs which one may joke about. But with some contemplation, one can see the humourist’s design.

Sidhu attacked SAD’s Badal family for ruining the state and the AAP for apparently humiliating him. But he spared the Congress. He attacked the BJP-SAD because they are the ruling party. No political front can grow without attacking the ruling party. Sidhu had some choicest words for AAP, for the latter is a new challenger in the state. Being a late starter in the game, Sidhu knows how often it becomes easy for a batsman to settle in for a long inning after taking to task the best of the opposition bowlers’ in the first few ball. Sidhu, who was once famous for his sixes, sure knows AAP must be attacked and how.

In Sidhu, AAP has found a perfect opponent who will take on Arvind Kejriwal’s party word by word, allegations by allegations, joke by joke. Some Twitter users were quick to notice, and they are already celebrating.

One doesn’t yet know what will be the fate of Awaaz-e-Punjab, but the state is in for not just being the most humorous polls in the country, but also most engaging. For Sidhu’s rants will give it prime time spots every day. And who knows, Sidhu may just end up walking away with all the votes.
