Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leader Lalduhoma is set to become the new chief minister of Mizoram today, December 8, 2023. Alongside him, several other ZPM leaders will also take oath as ministers on Friday. Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati will administer the oath of office and secrecy.

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled at the Raj Bhavan complex in Aizawl, subject to clear weather. However, if conditions get unfavourable, the program will shift to the Annexe building of the Assembly. Mizoram’s capital experienced rainfall this morning.

After being elected as the ZPM Legislature Party leader on Tuesday, Lalduhoma chose K Sapdanga as his deputy. The Val Upa Council, a party advisory body, convened to determine the council of ministers and met Lalduhoma on Wednesday.

For a 40-member assembly, Mizoram can appoint 12 ministers, including the chief minister. The 2023 Assembly Elections in Mizoram took place on November 7, and the results were announced on December 4, initially set for December 3.

In the elections, the ZPM emerged victorious, securing 27 seats, a notable increase from their previous count of 8 in 2018. Consequently, they displaced the Mizo National Front (MNF) led by outgoing chief minister Zoramthanga, which managed to secure only 10 seats this time, down from their previous win of 26 seats in 2018.
