Over 200 criminals were arrested and at least 500 persons were apprehended under preventive measures by the Delhi Police as the national capital gears up for New Year celebrations. The big crackdown, conducted under Op Aaghat 3.0, to address various forms of criminal activity and maintain public order, as per the police.
A majority of those arrested were involved in illegal activities, including property and drug offences. DCP South East Hemant Tiwari the arrests were made under the Excise Act, Gambling Act, and NDPS Act. The police have also arrested 116 people who were considered “bad characters,” as well as ten people who had stolen property and five people for stealing cars, as per an ANI report.
What is Operation Aaghat 3.0?
Operation Aaghat 3.0 is a targeted law enforcement drive conducted by the Delhi Police’s South Delhi District to address various forms of criminal activity and maintain public order. The operation focuses on enforcing the NDPS Act, the Gambling Act, and the Excise Act. It also involved large-scale police arrests of individuals involved in illegal activities.

Major seizures and arrests made under Aaghat 3.0
Delhi Police shared pictures and information of the big recoveries made following the crackdown. These included Illegal liquor (12,258 quarters), 21 homemade pistols, ganja (6.01 kilograms), 20 live cartridges, and 27 knives. During the operation, police also collected Rs 2,30,990 from gamblers and seized 310 phones, a four-wheeler, and 231 two-wheelers. A total of 1,306 people were arrested as part of preventive measures to stop more illegal activities.
DCP South East Hemant Tiwari stated, as quoted by ANI, “285 accused have been arrested under the Excise Act, Gambling Act, and NDPS Act. A total of 504 persons were held under preventive action, whereas 116 bad characters were also apprehended.
Other states’ policing strategies for New Year celebrations
Police in big cities have also stepped up their monitoring as the New Year approaches. As per a report by PTI, Bengaluru’s City Police Commissioner stated, “The prescribed timings fixed for New Year celebrations must be strictly followed. Necessary permission for the use of sound systems must be obtained, and no noise levels must exceed the prescribed limits.”
Meanwhile, Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar in Hyderabad has announced a “zero drugs” policy for New Year’s celebrations. It has also sent out special surveillance teams to all the major venues. A PTI report mentioned that officers are keeping an eye on people who have been arrested for drug offences in the past. There is now a multi-layered security plan in place that involves several law enforcement agencies.
