Mizoram’s newly elected legislator Lalduhoma of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) is scheduled to take oath of office on December 8, 2023, reports ANI. The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) secured a victory in the Mizoram Assembly Elections, clinching 27 out of 40 seats while the Mizo National Front (MNF) managed to secure only seven seats. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress secured 2 seats while Congress had to be content with a solitary win.
In terms of vote share, the ZPM garnered 37.86% vote share, surpassing the MNF’s 35.1%, Congress’s 20.8%, and the BJP’s 5.06%.
Following the results of the elections, MNF’s Zoramthanga tendered his resignation on Monday to Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati at the Raj Bhavan in Aizawl.
Voting for the 40 Assembly seats in the Mizoram Assembly elections was held in a single phase on November 7 with a voter turnout of 80.05 percent. The vote counting was taken up on December followed by the declaration of results by the Election Commission of India.
Who is Lalduhoma?
Lalduhoma serves as both the founder and president of the Zoram Nationalist Party, a regional political entity in Mizoram. Under his leadership, the party aligned itself with the Zoram People’s Movement coalition.
In the 2018 Mizoram Legislative Assembly election, Lalduhoma emerged as the coalition’s inaugural Chief Ministerial candidate. Successfully securing victories in the Aizawl West I and Serchhip constituencies.
In Mizoram assembly elections 2023, Lalduhoma again secured victory from Serchhip constituency by a margin of over 2,000, polling 8314 votes and defeated MNF’s J Malsawmzuala Vanchhawng who polled 5,332 votes.
