Dharavi Election Results 2024 Highlights: Congress’ Gaikwad Jyoti wins by 23,459 votes, Shinde Sena’s Rajesh Khandare falls short

The opposition Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition sees the redevelopment project in a different light. They claim it is nothing more than a strategy to hand over prime Mumbai real estate to industrialist Gautam Adani under the pretext of redevelopment. Critics argue that the project is designed to benefit corporate interests rather than the residents of Dharavi.

In the final Round 19/19, Dr. Gaikwad Jyoti Eknath of the Indian National Congress secured 70,574 votes, widening her lead over Shiv Sena’s Rajesh Khandare, who trailed with 47,165 votes, marking a substantial margin of 23,409 votes.

Dr. Gaikwad Jyoti Eknath of the Congress party continues to dominate, leading with 65,704 votes, leaving Shiv Sena’s Rajesh Khandare trailing far behind at 40,080 votes, a gap of 25,624 votes.

Indian National Congress candidate Dr. Jyoti Gaikwad is leading by 18,805 votes with a total of 52,116 votes, leaving Shiv Sena’s Rajesh Khandare trailing at 33,311 votes.

Dr. Gaikwad Jyoti Eknath of the Indian National Congress is leading with 31,927 votes, holding a margin of 8,830 votes over Rajesh Shivdas Khandare of Shiv Sena, who trails with 23,097 votes.

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project, led by Adani Realty, has become a focal point in the ongoing political discourse. Backed by the Mahayuti alliance, the project is presented as a transformative effort to replace Asia’s largest slum with modern housing and infrastructure. Proponents argue that it will offer residents cleaner, more hygienic living conditions and finally break the cycle of poverty that has plagued the area for decades.

In Round 4 of the Dharavi Assembly election, Dr. Gaikwad Jyoti Eknath of the Indian National Congress is leading with 14,798 votes, holding a 4,663-vote margin. Rajesh Shivdas Khandare of Shiv Sena is trailing with 10,135 votes.

The caste and surname analysis of Dharavi (SC) Assembly seat shows a diverse electorate. The largest group is the Muslim community, making up 33.4% of voters (85,601), followed by the Nadar community at 3.8% (9,739) and Christians at 2.4% (6,150). Other notable communities include Shinde, Gupta, Yadav, and Jaiswar (1.1% each with 2,819 voters), and Kamble (1% with 2,562 voters). Several smaller groups such as Jadhav, Kadam, Sharma, Patwa, and others also contribute to the voter base, with varying percentages down to 0.2%.

As of the 2019 Parliament elections, the total number of voters in Dharavi (SC) assembly was 256,291. The constituency has 283 polling booths for the elections.

In the second round of counting for the Dharavi Assembly constituency in Maharashtra, Dr. Gaikwad Jyoti Eknath of the Indian National Congress continues to maintain a strong lead with 7,158 votes, a gain of 1,900 votes. Trailing behind, Rajesh Shivdas Khandare of Shiv Sena has secured 5,258 votes, losing 1,900 votes.

As per the 2011 Census, Dharavi (SC) has 41,263 SC voters (16.1%), 923 ST voters (0.36%), and 85,601 Muslim voters (33.4%) as per the voter list analysis. The constituency has a total of 256,291 voters as of the 2019 Parliament elections.

Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his 'Ek hai toh safe hai' slogan, linking it to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project being handed over to the Adani Group. Gandhi had used posters to emphasise his point.

The major candidates contesting the Dharavi Assembly seat are Congress's Dr Jyoti Gaikwad and Shiv Sena's Rajesh Khandare. The traditionally Congress-dominated area is now a battleground for the Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
