Arvind Kejriwal claims to be a secular leader indulged in politics to fight against corruption in the country. His Twitter profile description says “Political revolution in India has begun. Bharat jaldi badlega.” But his statements often prove he is a shrewd politician, may be a genius at that, trying to exploit the traditional fault lines of Indian society, like all other political parties do.

Indian society is marred by divisions based on caste, religion, regions. Kejriwal, an engineering graduate and a former bureaucrat, hasn’t yet shown he is interested in bridging any of these differences.

The Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor on Wednesday shocked many by posting a tweet with communal overtones. The tweet targeted Delhi Lieutenant Najeeb Jung, who, according to Kejriwal, has sold his soul to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to become the Vice-President of India. “Najeeb Jung has sold his soul to Modi to become the Vice-President. But Modi will never make a Muslim the Vice-President, no matter what he does,” Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi.

The power tussle between both Kejriwal and the LG is out in the open for long. The tussle should have stopped after the Delhi High Court’s August 4 judgment that held that the National Capital Territory is a Union Territory and the Lieutenant-Governor is its administrative head.

However, Kejriwal’s attacks on the L-G continue. Sometimes they even get personal, like the one on Wednesday. Kejriwal claimed that PM Modi would never make Jung the Vice-President because he is a Muslim. It may be possible the Kejriwal knows the PM very closely or he is personally very close to the PM. But the common man can read the communal intentions of Kejriwal, who is participating in election rallies across Uttar Pradesh and Punjab these days. For the record, there are many Muslim faces in the Modi government like MJ Akbar, Syed Akbaruddin, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi etc.

Recently, Kejriwal had attacked PM Modi, saying the latter had destroyed the Hindus even as the BJP claims to be a party of the Hindus. “BJP says it is the party of the Hindus. With demonetisation, Kejriwal hasn’t even left the Hindus. Even Hindus have been destroyed,” Kejriwal had tweeted on November 20.

Curiously, Kejriwal always posts such tweets in Hindi, even as most of his tweets are in English.
