Lok Sabha elections Phase 5 Live: Voting was held across 49 constituencies across six states and two union territories during the fifth phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections today. The polling concluded at 5 pm. Campaigning for the fifth phase concluded on Saturday.
Key candidates in the fray included Rahul Gandhi from Rae Bareli, Rajnath Singh from Lucknow and Smriti Irani from Amethi. The states where polling was held in this round of elections were Uttar Pradesh (14), Maharashtra (13), West Bengal (7), Bihar (5), Odisha (5), and Jharkhand (3). The Union territories were Jammu and Kashmir (1) and Ladakh.
After this phase, voting has concluded on 430 seats. The sixth and seventh phase will take place on May 25 and June 1. The elections, which are being conducted in seven phases, will conclude on June 1. The counting of votes will take place on June 4.

After casting his vote, former HDFC Chairman Deepak Parekh said, "...I asked the man (polling official) who checked the name, what is the turnout now? He said it is low here in South Bombay. But, the process is also slow. I know some people who stood for 1 hour and went as the weather was hot... It is necessary to have a stable government. It is the key to progress. So we need stability. We need good leadership at the centre, which we've been having for the last ten years... India is doing well... The priority even of the existing government is to bring the lowest strata of people up..."

Amid voting for the fifth phase of elections, Rahul Gandhi urged the voters to exercise their franchise and said, "there is a storm of change in the country".
In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi said, "Today is the fifth phase of voting! In the first four phases itself, it has become clear that people have stood up to protect the Constitution and democracy and are defeating the BJP. This country is fed up with the politics of hatred and is now voting on its own issues. Youths for jobs, farmers for MSP and freedom from debt, women for economic independence and security, and labourers for fair wages."
"The people are fighting this election along with INDIA (bloc) and there is a storm of change in the country," the former Congress president said.
After casting his vote in Ladakh, activist Sonam Wangchuk said, "I have just voted and I am happy. I am also feeling sad because many people don't exercise right to vote. Many leaders sacrificed a lot for this country. People should celebrate the festival of democracy."

SSP Baramulla, Amod Ashok Nagpure said, "Voting is going on well. People have come out in large numbers. We have ensured adequate security arrangements so that people can vote without any fear..."
Polling is being held on 13 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, including six seats in Mumbai. However, brisk voting has been recorded in the state till 11 am with a turnout of 15.93 per cent. This is much lower in comparison to the voter turnout in West Bengal, which stood at 32.70 per cent till 11 am.

The overall voter turnout was recorded at 23.66 per cent till 11 am, with the highest turnout being recorded from West Bengal at 32.70 per cent and the lowest from Maharashtra at nearly 16 per cent, according to the Election Commission data.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has set up a unique polling station for just five members of one family in a remote village of Washi in Leh district, Ladakh.
The family consists of six members and five of them - two males and three females - are eligible to vote.

Talking about the second phase of Assembly elections in Odisha on 35 seats, 5T Chairman and BJD leader VK Pandian displayed confidence in winning and said, "...People have faith in BJD and the party will sweep the second phase of elections."
Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and state BJP president Babulal Marandi cast his vote and said, "I have voted. Everyone should use their right to vote. They should vote fearlessly."
After casting her vote, BJP MP and candidate from Amethi Lok Sabha seat, Smriti Irani said, "Today it is my good fortune that I have cast my vote in my village Gauriganj with the resolve of a Viksit Bharat. I appeal to the people to cast their vote. It is our responsibility towards the future of our country..."
After casting his vote at a polling booth in Thane, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said, "All the important decisions have been taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last 10 years. So I am confident that the people of Maharashtra are going to vote for Mahayuti."
Extensive security arrangements have been made for the voting. Around 9.47 lakh polling officials have been stationed across 94,732 polling stations to facilitate voting for over 8.95 crore voters, which includes 4.69 crore males, 4.26 crore females, and 5,409 third-gender electors. To ensure the smooth movement of polling and security personnel, 17 special trains and 508 helicopter sorties have been arranged.
