Google announced fresh funding commitments and collaborations in India’s artificial intelligence ecosystem. The investments include $8 million for India’s AI Centres of Excellence, $4.5 million for Wadhwani AI, $2 million to establish an Indic Language Technologies Research Hub at IIT Bombay, and $400,000 to support the development of India’s health foundation model, the company said.

AI Centres of Excellence

The company said it will support India’s AI Centres of Excellence across health, agriculture, education and sustainable cities with funding of $8 million. In addition, Google has earmarked $400,000 to back the development of India’s health foundation model, which is expected to improve clinical efficiency and patient outcomes.

As part of its healthcare push, Google said it will support new collaborations leveraging its medical AI model, MedGemma, to build India-specific health foundation models. Ajna Lens will work with clinicians from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to develop AI tools for dermatology and outpatient department (OPD) triaging, while researchers and clinicians from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) will explore broader clinical applications of AI.

The resulting models will be integrated into India’s digital public infrastructure and made accessible to the wider ecosystem, the company said.

Funding for Wadhwani AI

Google also announced funding of $4.5 million for Wadhwani AI to support the development of multilingual AI-powered applications for healthcare and agriculture. Separately, startups working on Indic language solutions, Gnani.AI, CoRover.AI and BharatGen, will receive grants of $50,000 each to build language models tailored for Indian users.

To advance inclusive AI research, Google said it will make a founding contribution of $2 million to set up an Indic Language Technologies Research Hub at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. The hub aims to ensure that global advances in AI reflect India’s linguistic diversity.
