JSW Energy has commissioned its first green hydrogen plant. In an exchange filing, the JSW Group company said that the facility is India’s largest green hydrogen manufacturing plant.

JSW Energy said that it will supply the produced green hydrogen to the adjacent JSW Steel facility for use in steel production. The company added that the energy production plant will supply 3,800 tonne per annum of green hydrogen, along with 30,000 tonnes per annum of oxygen to the JSW Energy facility. Both facilities are located in Vijaynagar, Karnataka.

JSW Energy elaborated that the latest green hydrogen production forms part of its 6,800 tonnes per annum allocation under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition program by the Solar Energy Corporation of India.

“The project is a key milestone in our country’s clean energy journey and reflects our unwavering commitment to support India’s transition toward a low-carbon economy and decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as steel,” said Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy.

JSW Energy expansion plans

JSW Energy said it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with JSW Steel, part of the same JSW Group, to progressively supply 85,000–90,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen and 720,000 tonnes per annum of green oxygen by 2030.

JSW Energy’s push toward green hydrogen comes amidst the pressure from the European Union for environmentally friendly steel production. At the same time, India has also announced the ambitious plans to produce 5 million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen by 2030.

At present, JSW Energy has a total locked-in generation capacity of 30.5 GW. The company has an operational capacity of 13.3 GW and an under-construction capacity of 12.5 GW. The company also has 29.4 GWh of locked-in energy storage capacity through hydro pumped storage projects of 26.4 GWh and a battery energy storage system of 3.0 GWh.
